Belledune, NB – June 18, 2025 – The Belledune Port Authority (BPA) marked a year of growth, strategic partnerships, and community-focused progress in 2024, laying strong foundations for the future of green energy and economic development in Northern New Brunswick. These highlights were shared during the Port’s virtual Annual General Meeting, where it also released its 2024 Annual Report.
2024 marked the election of a new provincial government under Premier Susan Holt. We value the strong relationship we had with the previous government and are encouraged by Premier Holt’s commitment to advancing the work on our Green Energy Hub. The appointment of two ministers from Northern New Brunswick—Minister René Legacy and Minister Gille Lepage—to key economic development portfolios is a positive step forward for our region. Highlights of 2024 include:
- $3 million invested in critical development planning and feasibility studies to prepare port lands for clean energy projects.
- A new 25-year agreement with QSL, reinforcing infrastructure investment and shared innovation goals.
- Continued leadership in biomass exports, earning recognition from Canadian Biomass Magazine as Eastern Canada’s largest exporter for six consecutive years.
- Re-certification by Green Marine, further elevating the Port’s environmental standards across multiple criteria.
- Organizing sponsor of the Atlantic Indigenous-Led Energy Symposium, emphasizing Indigenous leadership in the energy sector.
- Ongoing work by the Community Workforce Development Committee, engaging local communities in informed conversations about hydrogen, biomass, and economic impact forecasts.
Throughout the year, the BPA maintained its commitment to accessibility, community support, and regional collaboration. In 2024, the Port:
- Welcomed three new staff members to strengthen operations.
- Donated a portion of net profits to local initiatives, part of over $638,000 contributed since 2014.
- Partnered with Ability New Brunswick for an accessibility audit to improve both physical and virtual infrastructure.
- Welcomed Andy Flanagan, former mayor of Belledune, to the Board of Directors, reinforcing strong community ties.
